Who is Derrick John Thompson, Expelled Minnesota Democrat’s son suspect in car crash that killed 5 women

The reported suspect in a horrific hit-and-run crash that killed five people last week is the son of former Minnesota state Rep. John Thompson, a Black Lives Matter activist who was kicked out of his own party. Three years prior, John Thompson was found guilty in another devastating hit-and-run.

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune was informed by sources that the suspect is Derrick John Thompson, 27, of Brooklyn Park, even though police have not released his name.

Derrick is the son of John Thompson, who was removed from the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party caucus in September 2021 for allegedly making a false accusation of racial profiling against a police officer and for having previous legal issues, including accusations of domestic violence.

The elder Thompson gained notoriety during the George Floyd demonstrations in 2020 when he and Black Lives Matter demonstrators invaded the Hugo, Minnesota, residence of police union leader Bob Kroll.

After receiving the support of Rep. Ilhan Omar, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, and Attorney General Keith Ellison, Thompson went on to win his election to the state legislature that November. In the election held in November 2022, he lost his seat.

According to Minneapolis police, a speeding car struck a car carrying five Somali women under the age of 20 on Friday after it ran a red light. According to local media, the five victims—all of whom were apparently members of the Dar Al Farooq Islamic Center—were all killed, and the suspect was receiving treatment for his wounds over the weekend.

The SUV struck the driver’s side of the other vehicle in the now-viral CCTV video of the collision. The unlawful publication of the footage is being looked into, according to Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara, according to the Star Tribune.

The Star Tribune said that Derrick Thompson is awaiting charges, which may be brought as soon as Tuesday.
