Francisco Severo Torres, a man from Massachusetts, allegedly tried to open the emergency door of a flight going from Los Angeles to Boston, before allegedly stabbing a flight attendant in the neck with a broken metal spoon, the Justice Department said in a release on Monday.
Torres was initially arrested at Boston International airport and then produced before U.S. District Court Magistrate Judge Dein who ordered his detention till a scheduled hearing on Thursday, March 9.

Who is Francisco Severo Torres?
Francisco Severo Torres is a 33-year-old man from Massachusetts.
According to charging documents filed in court, the incident occurred on March 5, 2023, approximately 45 minutes prior to landing in Boston. The flight crew received an alarm in the cockpit indicating that a starboard side door between the aircraft’s first class and coach sections was disarmed. Upon inspection, a flight attendant found that the door’s locking handle had been moved and that the emergency slide arming lever had been disarmed.

A fellow flight attendant reported observing the suspect, identified as Torres, near the door and believed he had tampered with it. When confronted by a flight attendant, Torres allegedly responded by asking if there were cameras showing that he had done so.
The flight attendant reported their suspicions to the captain and advised that Torres posed a threat to the aircraft. Shortly thereafter, Torres allegedly got out of his seat and approached the door where two flight attendants were standing. He then allegedly thrust one of the flight attendants in a stabbing motion with a broken metal spoon, hitting the flight attendant on the neck three times.

Passengers on the flight were quick to respond and tackled Torres, with the assistance of the flight crew. He was immediately taken into custody upon the flight’s arrival in Boston. Torres now faces charges of tampering with an aircraft and assaulting a flight attendant.
