A suspected serial murderer has been arrested in connection with the infamous Gilgo Beach murders on Long Island. Rex Heuermann, 59, a New York City-based architect, was arrested at his house on First Avenue in Massapequa Park, according to reports.

Another source who did not confirm the name said the suspect is scheduled to appear in court in a few hours. The so-called “Gilgo Four,” who were discovered wrapped in burlap just days apart in late 2010, and not the other six people who were later suspected of being involved, are the focus of the arrest, according to the source.

Who is Rex Heuermann?

Heuermann is the owner and founder of the Midtown architecture firm RH Consultants and Associates, which has as clients Catholic Charities, NYC-DEP Sewerage Treatment, and American Airlines, according to its website.

Heuermann claimed to have been “born and raised on Long Island” in an interview that was uploaded to the Bonjour Realty YouTube channel. “I’ve been working in Manhattan since 1987, a very long time,” he said.

Heuermann was arrested outside his Manhattan office last night after he had left for the day. Police have taken over his Massapequa Park home today. The modest property is located directly north of Gilgo Beach, where the bodies were found in 2010 and 2011.

Heuermann, a married father of two, has resided on the estate since the 1980s. He’s been on their radar since last year, according to law enforcement sources, according to reports. The calls made from burner phones to the victims’ cell phones more than ten years ago were tracked by investigators in order to link him to the crimes.

Reports stated that rather than any DNA discoveries, “good, old-fashioned police work” solved the case. The locations of the calls matched Heuermann’s residence and workplace. It is yet unknown what exact piece of information resulted in his arrest last evening.
