Asa Ellerup, the estranged wife of Gilgo Beach murder suspect Rex Heuermann, is being represented in the divorce proceedings by Robert Macedonio. A week or so after the accused serial killer’s July 13 arrest, Ellerup filed for divorce.

On Wednesday, July 19, Macedonio revealed that a complaint and summons on behalf of Ellerup were filed at the Suffolk County Supreme Court as part of the divorce case. He told The Daily Mail, “I can confirm that we did file a summons complaint for the divorce today in Suffolk County Supreme Court.”

Who is Robert Macedonio?

Robert Macedonio is a 56-year-old lawyer from Long Island. He was formerly convicted of cocaine possession and is an ex-con. Asa hired attorney Macedonio to represent her in the split.

Initially employed as an assistant district attorney for Suffolk County, Macedonio had his law license suspended after entering a guilty plea to felony cocaine possession in 2008.

Macedonio, a criminal defense attorney at the time, was detained for having at least 0.5 grams of cocaine. According to a 2016 Newsday report, this was the only outcome of a year-long investigation by the DA’s office into more criminal conduct they claimed Macedonio was involved in, such as witness tampering and high-level narcotics offenses.

According to accounts, the district attorney eventually reduced the felony conviction to a misdemeanor without giving a reason, allowing the lawyer to get his license back.

According to News12, the action prompted a federal investigation of the office at the time. However, a spokesman for the Brooklyn office of the US Attorney, which oversees such inquiries, declined to confirm any investigation.

“Everyone who was involved in that decision-making process is long gone from here. We really can’t speak for the decision-making of the folks who were in charge before we got here,” he said.
