According to Clarion Ledger, the Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Office stated that they discovered Westmoreland dead when they arrived at Blackjack Missionary Baptist Church, which is four miles from Mississippi State’s campus.
While an investigation is ongoing, no foul play is suspected, according to media reports. To find out what happened to Westmoreland, the university is collaborating with the Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Office and the Oktibbeha County Coroner’s Office.

Who is Sam Westmoreland?
Sam Westmoreland, a freshman from Tupelo, Mississippi, was majoring in industrial technology, according to a statement from the university. A biography on his athletics page states that he would have turned 19 on October 21.
Westmoreland was a football player and student at Tupelo High School. The football coach at the high school said in a statement published on October 19 on Twitter by the Tupelo School District that Westmoreland was a captain his senior year and a leader.
Westmoreland joined the Bulldogs after a stellar career at Tupelo High, where he was selected to the Northeast Mississippi Football Coaches Association All-Star Game last year. After his senior year in 2021-22, he was named to the Region 2-6A second team.

Michael Hunt, the coroner for Oktibbeha County, told The Associated Press on the night of October 19 that no foul play is thought to have occurred but did not offer any additional information. According to Mississippi State, details about Westmoreland’s death is being gathered by the Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Office, as well as the offices of the county coroner and medical examiner.
