A trooper identified as Sgt. Cory Maynard of the West Virginia State Police was killed on Friday in a shooting incident in Mingo County.

According to media reports, the suspected shooter is identified as Timothy Kennedy, and the search for the suspect is on.

Who is Timothy Kennedy?

The suspect in the shooting incident is identified as Timothy Kennedy. He is 29 years old and hails from Beech Creek. The police officials are searching for the suspect now.

According to information shared by Mingo County Emergency Management, a 29-year-old, armed suspect, who was involved in the shooting incident is on the run in the area of Beech Creek. The residents are requested to shelter themselves in their homes.

The West Virginia State Police in a press release said a uniformed trooper has been shot dead while responding to a shooting in the Beech Creek area. As the officers reached the scene they were welcomed with gunfire.

Governor Jim Justice released a statement reacting to the incident. The post read, “I am absolutely heartbroken tonight to report that Sergeant Cory Maynard of the West Virginia State Police was fatally wounded in an incident this afternoon near Matewan. Cathy and I share our deepest sympathies and our heartfelt prayers to all of Trooper Maynard’s loved ones and the entire law enforcement community of West Virginia for this tragic loss tonight.”

U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of West Virginia Will Thompson also condoled the death of the trooper in a post and tweeted, “We join with all West Virginians in grief at the loss of State Police Sgt. Cory Maynard, who was shot and fatally wounded in the line of duty earlier today.”, ”Throughout this district, our state and our nation the men and women of law enforcement put their lives on the line for the safety and protection of us all. Today’s tragedy is a grim reminder of the dangers inherent in that sacred task. Sgt. Maynard proved himself an outstanding example of selfless service and dedication to his community, and we mourn alongside our state and the law enforcement community”, he also added.
