Who was Beth Murphy?
Beth Murphy was the owner of Murphy’s Bleachers, a popular bar amongst Chicago Cubs fans across from Wrigley Field. “I’ve been a patron of Murphy’s for as long as I’ve been in Chicago, and it’s a great institution. And Beth was someone everyone liked and is gonna miss,” Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts said.
After the passing of her husband Jim, Murphy managed the business for 20 years. Outside the pub, Sheffield Avenue still carries his name. However, in recent years Beth took the initiative, not just for Murphy’s but for the entire neighborhood.
Murphy passed away on April 24 at Rush University Medical Centre in Chicago while she was fighting cancer.

The official Twitter account for Murphy’s Bleachers wrote a tweet announcing Beth Murphy’s passing. The tweet included a photo of the bar where a memorial poster for Beth was posted. It said, “We will miss you, Beth.” Another image showed the Chicago Cubs’ Wrigley Field paying respect to Beth.
Murphy also saw to it that business thrived when there were no significant events taking place locally. “It’s about being a community leader and giving back,” said Maureen Martino, with the Lakeview East Chamber of Commerce.
Murphy also provided to her staff, and they continue to be appreciative of her kindness. “She’s so sincere. You’ll never see another Beth Murphy,” Murphy’s Bleachers General Manager Freddy Fagenholz said.
The Cubs intend to take part in a moment of silence before Tuesday’s game in remembrance of Beth Murphy in honor of how important she was to their supporters and our community.
