115 inmates set section of St Louis jail on fire, smash windows

Nearly 115 prisoners took over a section of the St Louis Justice Center, known as the city jail, injuring a corrections officer, NBC News reported quoting officials.

According to St Louis Post-Dispatch, the incident was reported around 2.30am PT on Saturday on the fourth floor of the jail.

Jacob Long, spokesperson for Mayor Lyda Krewson, said the incident is developing.

The group of inmates threw items out of broken windows, started a small fire inside the jail, flooded floors and clogged toilets, according to the officials.

Firefighters and police were at the scene and closed the area surrounding the building.

One car had a shattered windshield on the street and chairs and other items were scattered, NBC News reported. Several of the inmates were seen holding signs and raising slogans.

As of Friday, there were 633 inmates at the Justice Center.
