32 killed, 66 injured in a train crash in Egypt

  • Dozens of ambulances were sent to the spot in Tahta district
  • Another train crash was reported in March 2020 that injured 13 people

At least 32 people
were killed and 66 got injured in a train crash in southern Egypt on Friday,
AFP reported quoting the health ministry. According to the statement, dozens of
ambulances were sent to the spot in Tahta district, which is around 460 kilometres
south of the Egyptian capital Cairo.

The train collision comes amid another major transportation crisis in the country after a colossal ship, Ever Given, blocked the Suez Canal, one of the world’s busiest waterways, causing massive traffic jams at both sides of the lane.

In a video footage
released by AFP, several carriages of the train can be seen being overturned as the train crashes. However, this is not the first time Egypt saw a deadly train accident like this
in fact, such mishaps are quite common in the region due to the poor
rail infrastructure and maintenance.

One of the most fatal train accidents in the country was reported in 2002 that killed 373 people as a fire broke in the crowded train.

Another train crash was reported in March 2020, which led to a temporary suspension of rail services in the nation after 13 people got injured.
