A 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck off Taiwan on Thursday, AFP reported quoting the US Geological Survey (USGS). There were no reports of damage.

According to the USGS, the quake struck off the island’s east coast at a depth of 74 kilometres at 9:19 local time (13:19 GMT).

AFP quoted local media saying that tremors were felt across the island, with residents in the capital city of Taipei reporting shaking buildings.

“HUGE earthquake just now in Taiwan. Thought I’d blown a flat tire… turned out to be a big quake!” a user, who said he was driving home from work when the quake struck, tweeted.

Authorities said that metro services in the northern city of Taoyuan have been suspended.

Taiwan is located near the junction of two tectonic plates and is regularly hit by earthquakes.

In September 1999, around 2,400 people were killed after a 7.6-magnitude earthquake, the island’s worst natural disaster in history.
