Armed Forces Day is an annual celebration in the United States to recognize and honor the men and women who serve in the country’s defense forces. The day, commemorated on the third Saturday of May, is a component of the Armed Forces Week.

Last year, the day was observed on May 15. 

Significance

Armed Forces Day pays tribute to the US military forces for protecting the nation. The day aims to encourage conversations and spread knowledge about the key role that the military plays in society. The day also pays homage to those heroic patriots who sacrificed their lives on the battlefield in service of their homeland.

History

The day was first observed on May 20, 1950, under the theme ‘teamed for Defense’. 

Armed Forces Day came into being through the efforts of President Harry S. Truman. In order to replace separate Navy, Marine Corps, Army, Air Force and U.S. Coast Guard Days, Armed Forces Day was created. The day was announced on August 31, 1949, by Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson.

On the country’s first Armed Forces Day, processions, parades, receptions and air shows were conducted. More than a decade later, Armed Forces Day was declared as an official holiday by President John F. Kennedy. Since then, the day has been observed annually on the third Saturday of May. The parades are held in Bremerton, Washington.

Celebrations

Armed Forces Day is celebrated with open houses, military parades and local events. Local parades are held across the country, along with displays that highlight the history of the military. Civilians also pay visits to educational displays and interact with servicemen.

Ceremonies are also held at cemeteries or memorials to pay tribute to fallen officers, along with a performance by buglers who play ‘Taps’, a memorial song.
