Barcelona forward Sergio Aguero will be sidelined for at least three months after feeling unwell during Saturday’s game, the club announced on Monday.

After undergoing heart tests, Aguero was “subjected to a diagnostic and therapeutic process” that won’t allow him to play for a while, Barca said in their official statement. “The effectiveness of treatment will be evaluated in order to determine his recovery process.”

Meanwhile, Aguero on his official Twitter, said, “I am well and in good spirits to face the recovery process. I want to thank you all for so many messages of support and love that make my heart stronger today.”

However, the Catalan club did not give any more detail on the therapeutic process undergone by the 33-year-old Argentine. The Argentine striker made his first start at the Camp Nou for Barcelona against Alaves in the Spanish League. But after 40 minutes, in worrying scenes, Aguero was holding his chest and appeared to be having difficulty breathing, leading to him travelling to a nearby hospital in an ambulance.

Aguero, who just joined the Catalan club from Manchester City, had already missed several matches at the beginning of the season because of a previous injury. He has five appearances for the club so far, but started in only the previous two games.

Aguero’s only goal this season came in the 2-1 loss in the Clasico against Real Madrid at the Camp Nou last month.

Meanwhile, in their first season in almost two decades without Lionel Messi, who made a move to Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona have struggled for form. They are winless in three straight matches in all competitions and next face Dynamo Kyiv in the group stage of the Champions League on Tuesday.

Veteran defender Gerard Piqué also won’t be available because of a calf injury.

Following the frightening episode that Christian Eriksen suffered at Euro 2020, Barca’s decision to give Aguero the complete time to recover from the heart issue.
