Champions League: Manchester City and Lyon progress to Quarter Finals

Manchester City eliminated record 13-time winners, Real Madrid 4-2 on aggregate in the Champions League round of 16 following a 2-1 victory in Friday’s second leg at the Etihad Stadium, as the competition resumed after a five-month coronavirus shutdown. In the other quarter-final held in Turin, Juventus defeated Lyon 2-1 but crashed out of the tournament having conceded an important away goal, the match ended 2-2 on aggregate by Lyon progressed to the quarter-finals due to a superior away goal advantage.

Manchester City headed into the tie against Real Madrid with 2-1 advantage having won in the reverse fixture in Spain in February. Raheem Sterling put City ahead in the match with an assist from Gabriel Jesus. Karim Benzema’s header of Rodrygo’s assist gave Madrid hope, but Gabriel Jesus sealed the English side’s place in the last eight in Lisbon after a Raphael Varane error.

In the other tie of the night, French side Lyon lost to Italian side Juventus 2-1, however, the former progressed to the quarter-finals due to the away goals rule. Having won the first leg in France, Lyon had an advantage coming into the match and Memphis Depay netted a penalty to score an important away goal. Cristiano Ronaldo scored a brace in the match but could prevent the Juventus from crashing out of the tournament.

English side Manchester City will now meet Lyon in Lisbon for the quarter-final.
