At least 13 people have been killed in a school shooting in the city of Izhvesk in the Ural region of Russia on Monday, according to a BBC report citing Russian officials.

When news of the incident first broke, it was reported that nine had been killed in the school that caters to 1,000 children in the city. That number has since gone up. At least 20 people have been injured thus far. Of the 13 victims, seven were children.

The gunman has not been identified and reportedly shot himself before being arrested by the police. Their motive remains unclear. There have been videos circulating online of the shooter lying in a pool of blood wearing what seems to be a t-shirt adorned with a Nazi symbol.

An Investigative Committee team found that some of the others killed in the shooting included two security guards and two teachers, according to Russian officials.

Governor Alexander Brechalov of the Udmurtia region announced a period of mourning until September 29.

The city of Izhevsk is home to a population of roughly 640,000 residents and lies on the west side of the Ural mountains. It is also the capital city of the Udmurtia region.

While school shootings aren’t common in Russia, so far there have been three incidents of mass shootings in the country. Earlier this year in April, a 26-year-old man identified as Ruslan Akhtyamov walked into a kindergarden school with a double barreled shotgun and opened fire. He killed a staff member, two small children and finally turned the gun on himself.
