Disturbing videos of Cambodia Casino fire show people jumping out of Grand Diamond City Hotel

Disturbing videos circulating on social media of a fire that swept through a Cambodian hotel-casino, where At least 19 people have been killed so far, showed people apparently jumping or falling from upper floors.

While dozens of people remain missing after a fire engulfed the Grand Diamond City Hotel and Casino in Poipet, a city that borders Thailand on Wednesday, another 70 people were injured in the blaze. The death toll is expected to rise as emergency responders search for victims who were trapped in the building at the time of the fire.

Peerapan Srisakorn, from the Aranyaprathet Rescue Foundation, confirmed that some victims had jumped to their deaths from the burning building in a frantic attempt to escape. “Two people died immediately when they hit the ground and around four to five (others) broke their legs,” Srisakorn said.

Srisakorn further added that his team had witnessed 11 bodies in locked hotel rooms, including seven who had died from smoke inhalation. It was very difficult for rescue workers to undertake a survey of the building as it was full of thick smoke. Around 700 Thai citizens have been rescued and sent to hospitals in Thailand.

Currently, around 300 police officers, 11 fire trucks, and an array of helicopters are working on the scene, according to Banteay Meanchey Provincial Police Commissioner Major General Sithi Loh.

The cause of the fire is not yet known. What is known, however, is that the hotel used an electric system for rooms and elevators. As a result, when the fire started and the building lost electricity, many people got stuck in their rooms and could not escape.
