Egypts TikTok girls jailed for posting ‘indecent videos’ acquitted

Two Egyptian TikTokers, who were arrested and jailed last year
for posting “indecent videos” on the platform, have been ordered to be released
from prison.

In July, Mawada al-Adham and Haneen Hossam, known as the “TikTok
girls” in Egypt, were sentenced to two years in prison for “attacking society’s
values” and “breaching public morals” with their videos and were also asked to
pay a fine of 3 lakh Egyptian pounds (around Rs 14 lakh). On Tuesday,
the court overturned their jail terms.

“The court of appeal accepted the appeal filed by Haneen Hossam
and Mawada al-Adham against their imprisonment … on charges of incitement to
debauchery and attacking society’s values,” a court official said, AFP news
reported.

Hossam, a college student in archaeology who had over 13 lakh
followers on the platform at the time of her arrest, was taken into custody in April after she posted a video
telling her followers that girls could make money by posting content on the
Likee app.

Adham was arrested the following month after she posted several satirical
videos. Both of them were charged with inciting “debauchery.”

While both of them have been
acquitted of all charges, Adham still has to pay the fines.
