The Eiffel Tower reopened after being shut down by police for several hours on Wednesday over a bomb threat.

The French police had received an anonymous call suggesting a bomb had been placed there, reported Reuters. Though the police searched the premises for several hours, no explosives were found.

Hundreds of people, including tourists, restaurant staff and workmen were evacuated from the tower. “It was an orderly evacuation, there was no panic,” said Manuel, a tour guide on site to Reuters when the evacuation order was given.

Officials had also blocked the streets near the tower and bridge across the Seine River.

The 131-year-old tower gets about 25,000 tourists daily. However, the numbers had dropped significantly in 2020 after it was closed for three months due to the coronavirus pandemic. The monument reopened in July for visitors.
