Fans of football clubs Manchester United and Liverpool united to offer support to Cristiano Ronaldo after the 37-year-old football star announced the death of his newborn boy.
Fans came together in the seventh minute of a meeting between the clubs at Anfield tonight to offer their condolences to Ronaldo and his family.
Spread across the stands at Anfield, the crowd stood up and broke out in a round of applause. Supporters of Liverpool then sang ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’, the club’s anthem, in unison.
Gary Neville, co-commentator or Sky Sports, said: “It was a massive touch of class from Liverpool.”
Ronaldo and his partner Georgina Rodriguez shared the news of their son’s death on Monday night. It was later revealed that the Manchester United striker would not be a part of the Premier League fixture against Liverpool.
The couple was expecting twins. While their newborn daughter survived, their baby boy failed to make it.
“It is with the deepest sadness that we have to announce that our baby boy has passed away. It’s the greatest pain any parents can feel,” read a statement by Ronaldo on social media.
