In Pics: Left-leaning Gabriel Boric sworn in as Chile’s youngest president
Gabriel Boric, the left-leaning former student leader, was sworn in as Chile’s new president. Boric, aged 36, is the youngest leader of the South American nation.
Boric, who’s promised to form an inclusive government, aims to tackle poverty and the issues lingering due to the free market model imposed decades ago by Gen. Augusto Pinochet, who ruled from 1973 to 1990.
In the elections, which took place in December, Boric won 56% of the votes, against conservative opponent José Antonio Kast.
Part of Boric’s campaign pitch was more taxes on the wealthy while pushing for higher minimum wages. The president also plans on environmental protection in a country famous for its copper mines.
