A Russian airstrike on Wednesday left a maternity ward devastated in the besieged city of Mariupol, and injured at least 17 people. The strike nearly took out the entire front section of one building, but at the time of writing, no deaths had been reported. Amid growing concern from the West about Russia’s brutal tactics, a regional official described the strike as a “war crime without any justification,” while President Volodymyr Zelensky described the attack as an “atrocity.” Authorities, meanwhile, agreed on new ceasefires on Wednesday to allow thousands of civilians from bombed cities such as Kyiv, Mariupol, Enerhodar, and Volnovakha to escape. Earlier cease-fires for civilian evacuation had reportedly been violated by Russia.
