Kabul’s Hamid Karzai International Airport has seen chaotic scenes unfold as seas of people attempt to escape Afghanistan in the face of a new Taliban regime. The United States have resumed evacuation operations after they were temporarily suspended on Monday – as American troops gunned down two armed men.
The images shared by Maxar Technologies shows parked aircraft at the airport surrounded by hordes of people desperate to get out of the country. The images also show huge traffic jams outside the airport.
Five people were killed on Monday amid the chaos as hundreds tried to forcibly enter planes. It is not clear whether they were killed by gunfire or in the stampede. US forces had fired shots in the air to disperse the crowds.
Meanwhile, at least three people – who reportedly held on the wings of an American plane – fell to their deaths after the plane took off. In another tragic video, people can be seen chasing a US military aircraft on the runway, with some huddled on its wings as it is taxiing on the runway.
