US President Joe Biden, Speaker Nancy Pelosi and VP Kamala Harris were amongst the many prominent international figures who celebrated the Indian festival of lights- Diwali– this year. While the Bidens lit diyas (lamps) at the White House, Harris extended her ‘warmest wishes’ for a holiday filled with light, love, and prosperity.

Along with a picture, posted on POTUS’ Twitter handle, of him and Jill Biden lighting a lamp, Joe Biden wrote, “May the light of Diwali remind us that from the darkness there’s knowledge, wisdom, and truth. From division, unity. From despair, hope. To Hindus, Sikhs, Jains & Buddhists celebrating in America and around the world —from the People’s House to yours, Happy Diwali.”

Meanwhile, in a video message, US VP Kamala Harris said, “Lets remember to honour the light within one another. From our family to yours. I wish you a joyous Diwali.”

US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was also seen lighting a diya. Several elected officials, including Congressman Richard Neal, Chair, US House Ways and Means Committee, joined the celebrations.

For the first time, New York’s World Trade Center lit up for Diwali. A Diwali-themed animation went live on November 2 at 6 PM (local time) and continued until November 4.

“We are excited to create and curate the colourful imagery of Diwali on the WTC podium to bring the messages of peace, harmony, and unity,” said Mark Domino of the Durst Organization.

“There is no better symbol of the triumph of resiliency than the World Trade Center and we are very fortunate to work with The Durst Organization to bring this message to all,” said Rahul Walia, Founding Trustee of South Asian Engagement Foundation.
