United States President Joe Biden is “going to speak to the truth” about what happened on January 6th last year at the Capitol complex in Washington DC, the White House said in a statement. Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump has called off a press conference scheduled for the same day.

In a veiled dig at the former President, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said in a statement, “The president is going to speak to the truth of what happened, not the lies that some have spread since, and the peril it has posed to the rule of law and our system of democratic governance”, according to reports from Reuters.

Biden, along with United States Vice President Kamala Harris, is slated to deliver an address from the top legislative building on Thursday morning, the one-year anniversary of the violent storming. Supporters of Trump raided the Capitol building in an attempt to block the certification of votes of the 2020 Presidential elections.

Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the United States House of Representatives and a member of the Democratic party, announced a series of events in Washington DC last month to commemorate the January 6 attack, which has been linked to the death of at least five people.

“These events are intended as an observance of reflection, remembrance and recommitment, in a spirit of unity, patriotism and prayerfulness,” Pelosi told her Democratic colleagues in a letter announcing the events.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump backed out of conducting a press conference on January 6, which was originally being hosted in Florida resort Mar-a-Lago. He said that an address scheduled for January 15 in Arizona would also cover the same topics he had originally planned to discuss.

Trump continues to insist the election was “stolen” and the “real” insurrection was on November 3, 2020, the day Democrat Joe Biden won a 306-232 Electoral College victory.
