Lionel Messi and Neymar Jr were seen embracing each other after the Copa America final. Messi-led Argentina defeated Brazil 1-0, handing the six-time Ballon d’Or winner his first senior major trophy in national colours. Neymar, who was on the losing side, is yet to win a major trophy with Brazil.

Argentina, with the Copa win, ended a 28-year wait for a major trophy. At the final whistle, the Argentine players rushed towards Messi to celebrate with him. They lifted him and danced along. In complete contrast, the Brazilians were seen walking off the field with disappointment. Neymar broke down in tears.

However, Neymar walked towards the celebrating Argentine camp and appeared to be looking for Messi. They both spotted each other and embraced immediately. Messi and Neymar played together for Barcelona from 2013 to 2017, before the latter left for Paris Saint Germain.

What won many hearts on the internet was the way Messi not only continued to console Neymar while his team was celebrating but also kept his teammates away.

Neymar and Messi have lifted numerous trophies together in the four years they both played along at Camp Nou. Neymar has on numerous occasions expressed his respect and feeling of camaraderie towards the Argentine.

Angel Di Maria scored the only goal of the Copa America final. His 22nd-minute finish was lobbed over Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson as Argentina took the lead.

Lionel Messi was named the Best Player of the Tournament and he also finished with the most goals (4) and most assists (5).

“We fell short so many times, we dreamt so much about this, fought so hard,” said Di Maria, who was named man of the match.

“Many people said we wouldn’t manage it, we were criticized a lot. But we kept knocking at the door and kept going until today we knocked it down and entered.”

Messi could have wrapped up the win two minutes from time but slipped when clean through with only Ederson to beat.

“We have to be big enough to recognize (the defeat) regardless of how painful and difficult it is,” said Brazil coach Tite.
