Superman’s son Jonathan Kent to come out as bisexual, DC says

The
National Coming Out Day has Jonathan Kent — the son of Clark Kent or Superman,
and Lois Lane, is coming out as a bisexual on the DC comics in what can be called a landmark moment in comic book history. Kent’s coming out was announced on
Monday, on National Coming Out Day.

Jon Kent, who
is known as “the Superman of Earth,” will come out as a bisexual in the
November 9 issue of “Superman: Son of Kal-El #5”. In the comic, he starts a
romantic relationship with reporter Jay Nakamura, Variety reported.

This coming
out signifies another instance of a popular publisher trying to give representation
to the LGBTQ community in their comics and through it, in popular culture.

DC had
published an issue in August that showed Tim Drake or Robin also coming out as
bisexual. Other major DC  LGBTQ
comic characters include Batwoman, Harley Quinn, and Alan Scott (aka the first
Green Lantern). Marvel has not been far behind with characters like Iceman,
America Chavez (aka Miss America), and Northstar — one of the very first openly
gay comic book characters when he came out in 1992.

“I’ve
always said everyone needs heroes and everyone deserves to see themselves in
their heroes and I’m very grateful DC and Warner Bros. share this idea,” writer
Tom Taylor said in a statement.

“Superman’s
symbol has always stood for hope, for truth, and for justice. Today, that symbol
represents something more. Today, more people can see themselves in the most
powerful superhero in comics,” the statement added, according to Veriaty.
