Over 900 civilians have died in war-hit Ukraine since the Russian invasion began in late February, according to the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).

The OHCHR added that it believes that the death toll could be “considerably higher.”

In an update released on Sunday, the UN’s human rights office said that it had recorded 847 civilian fatalities in Ukraine since February 24, including 155 men, 119 women, 21 boys and 7 girls.

The OHCHR noted that the sex of 509 adults and 36 children remains unknown for now.

It further noted that it had recorded injuries of 1,399 civilians in the country.

“The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights believes that the actual figures are considerably higher, especially in Government-controlled territory and especially in recent days, as the receipt of information from some locations where intense hostilities have been going on has been delayed and many reports are still pending corroboration,” the U.N. office said in a statement.

“This concerns, for example, Mariupol and Volnovakha (Donetsk region), Izium (Kharkiv region), Sievierodonetsk and Rubizhne (Luhansk region), and Trostianets (Sumy region), where there are allegations of numerous civilian casualties. These figures are being further corroborated and are not included in the above statistics,” read the statement.

According to the OHCHR, the majority of the casualties recorded were a result of explosive weapons, including the shelling of widespread areas by airstrikes, missiles, multiple-launch rocket systems and heavy artillery.

At least 1.5 million kids have become refugees in Ukraine since Russia’s unprovoked attacks, UNICEF spokesperson Joe English told CNN on Sunday.
