Pep Guardiola won’t ‘betray’ Manchester City when he leaves; may renew contract

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, whose contract is set to run out at the end of the 2022-23 season, has said that he will discuss any decision on his future with the Manchester club.

Speaking at a news conference ahead of Manchester City’s trip to Southampton on Saturday, Guardiola shed light on several questions about his future.

“They [Manchester City] gave me everything, so I cannot betray them or do anything wrong to them. That would be not nice from my side,” making his stance clear.

However, in what should come as a delight to Manchester City fans, the Spaniard has not ruled out a contract extension either.

“Together we took decisions to come here and to extend the contract two times and it will be the same now. It depends how they feel about me and how I feel myself in the club,” said the 51-year-old, who has already led City to three Premier League titles since he joined the club in 2016.

When asked about whether he intends to leave management any time soon, Guardiola hinted that he had no such plan. “I don’t know – I feel good and comfortable. When I’m not energetic and feel a little bit drained or tired, I’m pretty sure I will quit. But right now, I feel good,” said the Spaniard.

Guardiola emphasized that for the time being, he would not think about his managerial future, and would focus instead on securing a fourth Premier League title, which is looking increasingly likely.

“Still we can play better, still some players can improve and we have some things I don’t like,” said Guardiola, adding that a constant desire to improve City’s game and his players keeps him motivated.

City are perched on top of the Premier League, 11 points ahead of second-placed Liverpool, who have a game in hand.
