Extending their impressive start to the season under David Moyes, West Ham sealed a 3-2 victory against Liverpool, dislodging the Jurgen Klopp team from third place in the Premier League on Sunday. Liverpool were left stunned early on after goalkeeper Alisson Becker flapped in the air to allow Aaron Cresswell’s inswinging corner to go through his hands in the fourth minute.

Soon after Trent Alexander-Arnold equalised at the end of the first half, while Jarrod Bowen ran at the Liverpool defense before slipping the ball to Pablo Fornals whose shot was helped into the net by Alisson’s weak touch. Another assist came from Bowen in the 74th when a corner was headed in by Kurt Zouma through Alisson’s raised hands.

Divock Origi pulled one back with an on-the-turn volley, but Liverpool couldn’t find another goal to prevent their first defeat in any competition since being knocked out of the Champions League by Real Madrid in April last season. It’s been even longer – until February — since the 2020 champions suffered a Premier League defeat.

Ahead of the final whistle, Sadio Mane squandered a gaping chance to equalise when he had an open goal to head the ball into the net.

West Ham is now only three points behind leader Chelsea after finishing sixth last season for the highest finish since being fifth in 1999.

Earlier in the game week, Chelsea rued their ample of missed opportunities as Matej Vydra struck home the equaliser to give Burnley a 1-1 draw in the Premier League on Saturday. The Czech Republic forward came off the bench to convert the Clarets’ only chance at Stamford Bridge, cancelling out Kai Havertz’s 33rd-minute header that had seemingly put the league leader on course for a fifth-straight top-flight victory.
