A stampede broke out at the Kanjuruhan Stadium in Malang, East Java province, after police used tear gas against brawling fans, leading to the death of 174 people. The incident, which took place during the Indonesian BRI Liga 1 match between Persebaya Surabaya and Arema Malang, has become the second worst soccer field disaster ever recorded.

The video shows fans invading the pitch after the high-profile contest ended 3-2 in favour of Persebaya Surabaya. The police came down heavily trying to disperse them and charged with teargas and lathis. 

Here is a video of dense tear gas smoke surrounding the stadium after the incident, recorded by one of the spectators.

Once the crowd broke onto the pitch, the players were escorted into the tunnel by the police, as the crowd tried to chase them. Reports say that seats and bottles were thrown into the stadium by the angry fans of the losing team.

The video below shows the initial moments of the incident where players are being escorted out while fans charged at them.

Reports from local media say that when the fans were rushing out after being charged with teargas, the gates of the stadium were not opened which created a pile-up situation. The trampling from the rush and the suffocation from the tear gas took 129 lives.

The video below shows fans lying near the stadium’s exit, either dead or unconscious from the suffocation.

Indonesian president Joko Widodo has ordered a probe into the incident. Meanwhile, he has said that all BRI Liga 1 matches will remain suspended for a week, till the probe in concluded.
