Florida will have its primary election night on August 23, 2022. The Republican-leaning state has a crowded ballot for most offices, but some go unchallenged. Florida governor Ron DeSantis, a Republican, is likely to be at the center of the political drama.

All possible public and legislative offices in Florida are up for election on Tuesday. These include the governor’s office, US Senate, House of Representatives, state legislature, state supreme court and school boards.

Here are three things to look out for in the upcoming Florida elections:

Senator Marco Rubio’s midterm matchup

US Senator Marco Rubio, a Republican, enters Florida’s elections with large political influence, funds, endorsements and the advantage of incumbency. Marco Rubio’s Democratic competition is likely to have a tough time in the November elections.

Val Demings, a US Representative, has emerged as the frontrunner in the Democratic primary for Florida’s Senate seat. Demings will face Democratic rivals like William Sanchez, entrepreneur Ricardo De La Fuente and others.

Ron DeSantis’ clout

Ron DeSantis, the top Republican in Florida, will be on the ballot for governor. However, the incumbent will be unchallenged, technically getting free passage to the midterms. DeSantis has a $135 million war chest for elections.

DeSantis has also signalled that he will launch his own bid for the White House in the next presidential elections. The upcoming midterms may serve as a warmup for the veteran Republican.

Roe v. Wade’s impact

The US Supreme Court overturned the Roe v. Wade precedent earlier this year, a move celebrated by most Republicans. While most GOP strongholds have seen the impact of opposing abortion rights, Florida deeply runs red.

Kansas, also traditionally Republican, voted to preserve abortion rights in this election season. Florida voters are also expected to keep abortion rights on the ballot.
