US Supreme Court permits release of Donald Trump’s tax records to Manhattan prosecutors

The US Supreme Court on Monday rejected former president Donald Trump’s request and allowed Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance to obtain Trump’s tax records, which the former president tried to shield from prosecutors, reported US media.

According to a report by ABC News, the matter was whether the Trump Corporation artificially boosted the value of the former president’s properties to get the best possible loans. Vance, who began investigating Trump in 2018 and first targetted his 2016 presidential campaign’s payments, has since indicated in court filings that the investigation has widened to look at possible crimes like fraud and tax evasion.

He also wanted to know whether the company presented different tax documents to the authorities.

Vance has issued a statement in response to the court’s Monday move, saying, “The work continues.”

In July last year, Trump brought a fresh challenge to the subpoena by arguing that it was overbroad and issued in bad faith. Two lower courts dismissed those new claims and ordered compliance.

He then filed an emergency application with the supreme court in October to stay the lower court decisions, which the justices have voted against on Monday.
