Bermuda has put out an exciting offer for people who are in search of a safe haven amidst the pandemic. The island territory in the North-Atlantic ocean, known for its pink beaches and tranquil climate has declared itself as a refuge as COVID-19 cases continue to surge in the rest of the world. As per the offer, a one-year, renewable residency certificate would be provided to remote workers and post-secondary students.

Bermuda which has a population of 64,000 had recorded 153 coronavirus cases. There are only 6 active cases in the territory as of now.

“The world is changing, and we want people we consider long-term visitors to come to Bermuda,” Premier David Burt said in a telephone interview with Bloomberg.

The programme is aimed at boosting the economy which is highly dependent on tourism. Burt also said that the deal might attract foreigners as Bermuda managed to contain the spread of coronavirus with rigorous rules.

“Unlike places where you have to worry about going to the supermarket, here we have very clear rules,” he said.

According to the government order, the applicants should have health insurance and should be employed by a legitimate overseas firm or their own company. The programme is priced at US$263 and will be launched on August 1. Barbados, a Caribbean island has followed suit and has rolled out a similar plan.
