On June 19, 2022, a tornado struck the city of Foshan in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong. At roughly 7.20 a.m., footage of the twister as it smashed through the Nanhai area in the city of over 9 million people was taken. The tornado caused power outages, uprooted trees, and damaged houses and automobiles in the one minute it was on the ground, however, there were no reported injuries.

This comes after a very powerful tornado just hit the southern metropolis Guangzhou on June 16, displacing millions of residents, causing property damage, and flooding farmland.

In spite of the fact that Twitter is banned in China, powerful images from the social media blogging site show the powerful tornado ripping through the city. As the twister tore through electrical lines, sparks were seen flying along with startling flares in some of the videos. The abrupt weather event caused significant damage to buildings, autos, and local infrastructure. People shrieking may be heard in the background.

No casualties have been reported till now although many have been evacuated. With catastrophic convective storms forecast this summer, the aviation authorities warned airlines against flying through extreme weather on Friday.

Floods have already hit China’s southern and eastern areas, including Guangdong, Guangxi, and Jiangxi. The low-lying southern region received its highest rainfall since 1961. Flooding caused by excessive rain has displaced 177,600 people, wrecked 1,729 homes, damaged 27.13 hectares of crop, and resulted in losses of more than $250 million, according to Guangdong’s Department of Emergency Management.

China historically has been prone to floods, with the mighty Yellow River earning the moniker “China’s sorrow” due to its susceptibility to flooding, which has resulted in disastrous effects.
