US President Joe Biden tested positive for Covid-19 and is “doing great” while isolating at the White House. The 79-year-old is experiencing “very mild symptoms” and will continue to carry out all his duties, press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said.

Biden’s physician Kevin O’Connor said on Thursday in a letter to Jean-Pierre that the president has a runny nose and fatigue with an occasional dry cough. He is taking Paxlovid, an antiviral drug used to reduce the severity of COVID-19.

Biden, who is the oldest president in US history and turns 80 this year, is fully-vaccinated and has twice received booster jabs. In a video shared on Instagram, the president is heard saying that he is “doing well” and is getting a lot of work done.

His wife first lady Jill Biden said she had tested negative.

“He’s feeling good. I tested negative this morning. I’m going to keep my schedule. According to CDC guidelines, I’m keeping masked,” she said.

The president will be working in isolation until he tests negative and will take part in meetings via telephone and Zoom, Jean-Pierre said.

On Wednesday, a video of Biden appearing to claim in a speech that he has cancer created alarm on social media. Biden was speaking during a visit to a former coal mine plant in Somerset, Massachusetts.

“My mother drove us rather than us being able to walk and guess what? The first frost, you know what was happening? You had to put on your windshield wipers to get literally the oil slick off the window. That’s why I – and so damn many other people I grew up with – have cancer and why for the longest time, Delaware had the highest cancer rate in the nation,” he said.
