What is the row over Prince Harry and Meghan’s daughter’s name

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle welcomed a baby girl, Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, on Friday, a spokesperson of the Duke and the Duchess of Sussex said on Sunday, adding that the name is a tribute to Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Diana. 

“Lili is named after her great-grandmother, Her Majesty The Queen, whose family nickname is Lilibet. Her middle name, Diana, was chosen to honor her beloved late grandmother, The Princess of Wales,” said a statement from the couple.

Though Buckingham Palace issued a statement saying that Queen Elizabeth II and her family were “delighted,” a palace source claimed that the 95-year-old monarch was not consulted about the decision.

On Wednesday, a spokesperson of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex received a statement saying, “The Duke spoke with his family in advance of the announcement – in fact his grandmother was the first family member he called.”

“During that conversation, he shared their hope of naming their daughter Lilibet in her honour. Had she not been supportive, they would not have used the name,” the spokesperson added. 

Lilibet Diana is the Queen’s 11th great grandchild and eighth in line to the British throne.
