American tennis professional Amanda Anisimova defeated Coco Gauff in the third round of Wimbledon 2022 on Saturday. She will next be facing France’s Harmony Tan in the fourth round of the Grand Slam tournament.

“This is the most special day of my career. It’s just a huge privilege to play on this court playing Coco. Winning is so special, especially in front of a full crowd — you guys were amazing,” Anisimova said after her victory, Euro Sport reported.

“There are so many American players doing well and I’m proud of my country and how we have been doing. It was really exciting to have an all-American clash on this court so it was really special,” she added.

Amanda Anisimova was born on August 31, 2001, in New Jersey’s Freehold Township to Russian immigrants Olga Anisimova and Konstantin Anisimov.

Anisimova began her tennis journey at five, all thanks to her elder sibling Maria, who played the sport at a university level. As her interest grew, her parents jumped right in to help. While her father played the role of a primary coach, her mother assisted and helped hone her skills.

As a junior player, Anisimova won the 2017 US Open girls’ singles title and two other Grade-A titles, which helped her rank as high as No. 2 globally. She also became the first finalist at the French Open girls’ singles event from the US in 14 years.

At the age of 16, Anisimova shot to fame during the 2018 Indian Wells Open, where she made her first top-10 victory against Petra Kvitová. The next year, she won her first WTA title at the Copa Colsanitas.

Fast forward to 2022, Anisimova reached the fourth round of the Australian Open and defeated four-time Grand Slam singles champion, Naomi Osaka.
