Authorities in Kazakhstan announced on Tuesday that a tourist from Australia who had been missing for three days in the country’s mountains had been discovered dead.

Police said they had found the body of Jake Michael Herd, born in 1995, near Big Almaty Lake in the Tian Shan mountains at an altitude of about 2,500m.

He showed no signs of a violent death, according to the rescuers, and was discovered with all of his personal belongings. The rescue effort was conducted in the midst of snow, rain, and wind. In total, 80 people with 20 special equipment participated in the search operation.

According to a friend, the man had just arrived in Almaty on vacation and was scheduled to leave on Monday, according to the official news agency Kazinform.
