Indian equity benchmarks remained on the backfoot for the
second straight session on Tuesday, with the Sensex and Nifty declining almost
1% each amid a sell-off in global markets. Investors remained cautious ahead of the
release of retail inflation and factory output data.

The BSE Sensex opened on a weak note and plunged 508.62
points or 0.94% to settle at 53,886.61. During the day, it fell 570.26 points
or 1.04% to 53,824.97. The NSE Nifty slipped 157.70 points or 0.97% to close at
16,058.30.

The broader indices ended in red with the BSE Mid cap index
down by 0.51%, while Small cap index down by 0.52%. On the sectoral front, Utilities
was up by 1.27%, Telecom was up by 1.22%, Power was up by 1.15% and Realty was
up by 0.04%, while IT down by 1.29%, TECK down by 1.21%, Metal down by 1.16%,
Auto down by 1.13% and FMCG down by 1.03% were the top losing indices on BSE.

Major laggards from the Sensex pack were Infosys down by
2.33%, Nestle down by 1.87%, Power Grid Corp down by 1.66%, Hindustan Unilever
down by 1.64%, Mahindra down by 1.64%, HCL Tech down by 1.63%, Kotak Mahindra down
by 1.47%, Asian Paints down by 1.36%, IndusInd Bank down by 1.33% and Titan
Company down by 1.33%.

Among the gainers were NTPC up by 1.87%, Bharti Airtel up
by 0.33% and Bajaj Finance up by 0.21%.

The rupee fell 15 paise to close at a new all-time low of
79.60 against the US dollar.

In the Asian markets, Shanghai, Tokyo, Seoul and Hong Kong
ended in the red.

European stock markets were also trading lower in mid-session
deals. The US markets had ended with losses on Monday.

Brent crude, the international oil benchmark fell 2.37% to $104.6
per barrel.

According to stock exchange data, foreign institutional
investors remained net sellers on Monday as they offloaded shares worth Rs
170.51 crore.
