John Shaw, husband of Kiran Mazumdar Shaw and former vice
chairperson of Biocon Limited passed away on October 24. His cremation will
take place at Wilson Gardens Crematorium at 4 pm today.

He was under treatment for cancer for some time. In June
this year, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw lost her mother Yamini Mazumdar, also an
entrepreneur, to cancer.

John was a foreign promoter and member of the advisory
board of several Biocon Group companies. He was a member of the Board of
Directors since 1999, according to the company website.

John was the former finance and managing director of Coats
Viyella Group. He worked for more than 30 years with Coats Viyella Limited. He
served in financial and General Management positions in Europe, Latin America,
and Africa. He was also the former chairman of Madura Coats from 1991-1998.

John Shaw had an honorary doctorate from the University of
Glasgow, the same institution from where he pursued his master of arts (MA) in
history and political economy.

According to the company website, he was an avid reader and
liked playing golf, football, rugby, and cricket in his spare time.

It was in 1998 that Kiran Mazumdar married the 1949-born
Scotsman John Shaw. Kiran Mazumdar is the executive chairperson and founder of
Biocon Limited and Biocon Biologics Limited. She is a first-generation
entrepreneur and global business leader with over four decades of experience in
biotechnology.

Biocon Limited is a biopharmaceutical company based in
Bangalore. It was founded in 1978. The company manufactures and sells generic
active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in more than 120 countries across the
globe, including the developed markets of the United States and Europe.

Biocon was the first Indian pharma company to be approved
by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to manufacture a
cholesterol-lowering molecule in 2001.
