Clients pay Taylor A Humphrey, from New
York, as much as $10,000 (Rs 7.6 lakh) to name their children. She founded
‘What’s in a Baby Name,’ a boutique company that provides anything from name
lists based on parents’ responses to a full-service baby-naming concierge.
Taylor’s services start at $1,500 (Rs
1.14 lakh), with fees varying according to the assignment. She will come up
with a baby name that “will be on-brand with a parent’s business” for
$10,000.

In 2020, she will have named over 100
children, earning more than $150,000 from wealthy parents.
Taylor founded the company in 2015. She
was giving out names for free at the time. She realised in 2018 that the demand
for her naming services could be turned into a specialised business.
She named a child Parker after a pair who
first kissed in the town of Parks.
Her work entails guiding parents through
the process of naming their children. She once persuaded a mother not to change
her infant daughter’s name, Isla, because she was worried that people might
mispronounce it.

The professional baby namer looks for
inspiration in anything from movie credits to street signs. She also maintains
a database of names that are rapidly fading.

there has been some trial and error. Taylor once persuaded a family not to use
a different spelling of a name for fear of changing the pronunciation.
