HCL founder Shiv Nadar topped the 9th EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2022 by Hurun India and EdelGive, released on October 20. The list features individuals who have donated Rs 5 crore or more during the period under review.

Shiv Nadar made it to the top with an annual donation of Rs 1,161 crore, according to the report.

Who is Shiv Nadar?

Shiv Nadar is the co-founder of Indian IT giant HCL Technologies. He is the former chairman and is now a strategic advisor to the HCL Technologies board. The billionaire is recognised as one of the pioneers of India’s computing and IT industry. 

The 77-year-old tycoon is also the founder and chairman of the Shiv Nadar Foundation. The industrialist has a glorious identity of a great philanthropist and “India’s Most Generous,” the title that Hurun’s India Philanthropy List 2022 awarded to him.

Nadar and his family were ranked fourth, stating their wealth at Rs 1,85,800 crore in Hurun India Rich List 2022.

Shiv Nadar was born to Sivasubramaniya Nadar and Vamasundari Devi on July 14, 1945, in  Moolaipozhi Village, Thoothukudi district, Tamil Nadu. 

He studied at Kumbakonam’s Town Higher Secondary School and Elango Corporation Higher Secondary School, Madurai. He completed his higher education at St. Joseph Boys Higher Secondary School, Trichy.

He received his pre-university degree from American College, Madurai and his graduate degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore.

He got married to Kiran Nadar,  a trustee of the Shiv Nadar Foundation and the founder of the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art. She is an Asian Games medalist and internationally renowned bridge player. She is also an Indian art collector and philanthropist.

Roshni Nadar is the only child of Shiv Nadar and the current chairperson of HCL Technologies. 

He was awarded Padma Bhushan by the President of India in 2008. Madras University conferred an honorary doctorate degree to him in 2007.
