The Central Board
of Secondary Education (CBSE)
declared Class 12 results at 2pm on Friday, July 30. The announcement comes as a big relief to
students who have been waiting months for their scorecards that will allow them
to determine their future academic choices.

CBSE was unable to
conduct its board exams this year on account of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Therefore, the board had to come up with an alternative way to score students
for their Class 12 marksheets.

After being
prodded by the Supreme Court to come up with a new formula to evaluate
students, CBSE came up with the following framework:

Students of Class
12 will get 40% marks from the marks they got in the subject in their
pre-boards and mid-term examinations held by their schools earlier this year,
30% marks will be awarded from their Class 11 final exam marks and the
remaining 30% from their Class 10 board exam results.

How will the
percentages be calculated?

For Class 12
students, the computation of marks will be based on the performance of students
in each subject
in either one or more unit tests, mid-term or pre-board theory
exams. This will make for 40% of their total score.

What role do
schools play in scoring students?

All
CBSE-affiliated schools have been asked to form ‘result committees’ that will
decide the marks of students within the aforementioned 40% benchmark. The marks
students score within that 40% tally will be at the discretion of respective
schools.

The result
committees will be made up of two senior-most teachers of the school and two
teachers teaching Class 12 at a nearby school.

What about
the rest of the marks?

The remaining 60%
of the score will be divided 30:30. 30% of marks will come from the computation
based on marks obtained in respective subjects in the year-end final theory
exams
that the students appeared for in 2019–20.

The rest 30% will
be taken from the Class 10 component. It will be the average of the theory
marks of three main subjects in which a student performed best in their Class
10 board examinations
. This average will be uniformly given to all Class 12 subjects
based on theory weightage of each subject.

What will the
final scorecard look like?

There are a varied
number of theory-internal assessment/practical break-ups for subjects that
students have in Class 12. Some subjects have 80 marks for theory and 20 for
practical, some have 70 for theory and 30 for practical and so on.

Internal
assessments and practical examinations were conducted by most schools. Schools
which were unable to conduct such exams were asked to hold them online. These
marks will be added to computed theory marks in each subject.

The final
scorecard will show the breakdown of weightages from the various earlier
scorecards and then arrive at a total.
