International Mother Language day is celebrated on February 21 every year to promote and recognise multilingualism and cultural diversity. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization announced that the theme for this year is “Fostering multilingualism for inclusion in education and society.”

In a statement, Director-General of UNESCO Audrey Azoulay said, “The theme of the Day this year, “Fostering multilingualism for inclusion in education and society”, thus encourages us to support multilingualism and the use of mother tongues, both at school and in everyday life.”

Azoulay added, “This is essential, because when 40% of the world’s inhabitants do not have access to education in the language they speak or understand best, it hinders their learning, as well as their access to heritage and cultural expressions.”

According to UNESCO, cultural and linguistic diversity is essential for sustainable societies. However, linguistic diversity is under a massive threat as several languages are disappearing with each passing day.

40% of global population do not have access to an education in a language they speak or understand. This year’s theme believes that languages and multilingualism can advance inclusion, and the Sustainable Development Goals’ focus on leaving no one behind.

Azoulay said, “This year, special attention is being paid to multilingual education from early childhood, so that for children, their mother tongue is always an asset.”
