Students and faculty at the UC Berkeley campus in Berkeley, California, were ordered to shelter-in-place on Thursday after police announced that there was a ‘credible’ threat on campus. However, after a thorough search, police announced that the campus was safe.

“The shelter in place has been lifted. Please leave the campus in a safe and orderly way via the closest route available. UCPD has determined based upon its investigation that it is appropriate to end the shelter in place,” the UC Police tweeted after the lifting of the order.

The shelter-in-place order was announced at around 9.30am local time when the police used the university’s WarnMe messaging system to announce, “A Campus-wide Emergency alert has been issued. Campus police are investigating a credible campus-wide threat. Please go inside and move away from doors and windows. If you are not on campus, please stay away from the area. Facilities Services are locking buildings on campus.”

The order effectively barred people from going near doors and windows, and those who were not on campus were ordered to stay away from it.

The order also resulted in temporary closures of campus library, parking garages, dining halls, and some 100 odd buildings on campus.

Classes were also cancelled for Thursday, and the university ordered professors to accommodate students by recording classes and making them accessible to students for remote viewing.

“Police are actively looking for a person who may want to harm specific individuals. Please continue to shelter in place at this time,” the UC police tweeted around an hour later at 10.18am local time.

However, the police later clarified that there was no active shooter on the campus, saying, “Shelter in place. Emergency personnel are responding. We will send updates approximately every 15 minutes or sooner if needed.” Meanwhile, Berkeley sent an email to those affected, saying that the shelter-in-place order was “relative to an emerging active shooter threat.”

UC Berkeley is home to around 42,000 students.
