Two women were shot outside a church in Ames, Iowa, on Thursday evening, adding to the string of gun crimes in the United States. The suspected gunman also reportedly killed himself after the incident.

The incident occurred roughly two weeks after the Uvalde school shooting, where more than 20 people were shot and killed by 18-year-old gunman Salvador Ramos. Most of the Texas victims were students who were studying in the fourth grade.

The identities of Iowa the victims, or the alleged shooter, are still unknown and law enforcement officials are still investigating the incident.

Nicholas Lennie, a captain at the Story County Sheriff’s Office, told local media reports that the gunman appears to have shot himself, Associated Press reported. The motives of the gunman are also under investigation.

The sheriff’s office responded to the shooting after receiving multiple calls at 6:51 PM on Thursday. The church is near Interstate 35, about 30 miles (48.28 kilometers) north of Des Moines.

Law enforcement officials investigating the incident are treating it as an isolated and lone shooter case, NBC News reported. A press conference will be held on Friday morning, where police officials are expected to announce the identities of the victims and the shooter.

The shooting was reported at the same time as US President Joe Biden was addressing the country about increasing cases of gun violence. Biden focused on the recent Uvalde and Buffalo shootings. “How much more carnage are we willing to accept?” Biden asked.

Biden, quoting data from the Centers for Disease Control, said that “guns are the number one killer of children in the United States of America,” ahead of car crashes.

“Over the last two decades, more school-age children have died from guns than on-duty police officers and active-duty military — combined,” Biden said while addressing the nation on Thursday.
