A four-alarm fire on 2 Gage St. in Worcester, Massachusetts, has killed two people and injured at least three others. Acting Deputy Fire Chief Adam Roche said that they were trying to tackle the fire.

The blaze erupted Saturday afternoon inside the six-family three-decker residence on Gage Street and Eastern Avenue.

Roche said the buildings were occupied at the time of the fire. The number of occupants was unknown, but authorities are trying to determine the details of those inside the buildings.

A full search of all three floors of the residence is underway due to the structural integrity of the building, the Fire Department said.

Adjacent buildings on 5 Eastern Ave. and 4 Gage St. were also damaged by the fire, Roche said.

Mayor Joseph M. Petty said in a city release he was heartbroken by the news.

“I send my deepest sympathies to the families of the victims,” he said. “Tragedies such as this affect so many lives and our city will no doubt come together to support those who are suffering from such an unimaginable loss.”

“Our first responders gave a valiant effort this morning, working to stop the fire from spreading, stabilizing the scene, providing emergency care on the scene, transporting victims,” Augustus said. “While we are deeply saddened by the loss of life, we are thankful to our public safety personnel for their selfless and professional response which prevented more damage and tragedy.”

No firefighters were injured in the incident. Authorities also said that they were trying to determine the cause of the fire.
