Production house Clean Slate Filmz is partnering with premiere OTT platforms like Amazon and Netflix to push out movies and web series in a deal worth about $54 million (Rs 400 crore). The battle for content has been heating up in India, one of the world’s largest entertainment markets, with many releases scheduled this year.

Based in Mumbai, Clean Slate Filmz will be releasing around eight films and series on these sites in the next 18 months. However, Karnesh Ssharma, the studio’s 37-year-old co-founder, declined to provide a full list before they were officially announced.

Ssharma’s statement has been confirmed by a Netflix spokesperson who said that they’ll be rolling out three upcoming productions with Clean Slate Filmz while Amazon hasn’t immediately responded.

The announcement of the upcoming releases is the latest sign that film production is recovering after being crippled by the financial and logistic disruption as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic that shut down cinemas and shooting in 2020. With curfews being relaxed and the theatres reopening in the past few months, there has been a boost to prospects of India’s studios to regain its lost stability.

The pandemic has exposed India’s 1.4 billion population to online entertainment from varied geographies and niche genres on an unprecedented scale. Streaming giants have been racing to secure content from small and edgier studios like Clean Slate Filmz, known for its 2015 motion feature ‘NH 10’, starring Anushka Sharma that tackled the practice of honor killings.

Clean Slate Filmz is now all set to release on Netflix “Chakda Xpress”, a biopic featuring Anushka Sharma. The actress will be playing the role of an Indian cricketer, Captain Jhulan Goswami, one of the world’s greatest female fast bowlers. Along with it, the thriller series ‘Mai’ and drama film ‘Qala’ are also set to be released here.
