Portugal in January 2022 re-elected Prime Minister Antonio Costa after the ruling Socialists won a majority by securing 117 seats in the 230-seat Portuguese parliament.
“An absolute majority doesn’t mean absolute power. It doesn’t mean to govern alone. It’s an increased responsibility and it means to govern with and for all Portuguese,” Costa was quoted as saying by news agency Deutsche Welle.
“The conditions have been created to carry out investments and reforms for Portugal to be more prosperous, fairer, more innovative,” the 60-year-old added after his election victory.
Interestingly, Costa has a connect to India.
Costa’s father’s family hails from Goa: the Prime Minister’s grandfather worked nearly his entire life in the former Portuguese colony before returning home.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister’s father, Orlando da Costa, was born in Mozambique, which was also an erstwhile Portuguese colony. A writer, Orlando’s works had strong references to his Indian roots, and even referenced the works of Indian greats such as Rabindranath Tagore.
Owing to his roots, Costa is well known in India, where he is often referred to as ‘Babush’, a Konkani word that means “a young loved one.”
The Prime Minister had also been awarded the Pravasi Bhartiya Samman during his 2017 visit to India wherein he took a trip to his ancestral home in Goa.
