Answer: USA

Located in the Las Campanas Observatory in the Atacama desert of Chile, the Giant Magellan Telescope is a US-led Extremely Large Telescope Program (US-ELTP) that is still under construction.

The project was conceptualised in 2004, and after a long-drawn period of finding partners and designing the telescope, construction began in 2012.

The Giant Magellan Telescope, upon completion, will have a 24.5 metre primary mirror with seven segments whose resolving power will be as much as 10 times greater than that of the Hubble Space Telescope.

The primary mirror, notably, will be made up of seven segments of 8.417 metres each, making the segments the world’s largest mirrors. Additionally, according to the Smithsonian Institute, the Giant Magellan Telescope “will be the largest optical telescope in the world, producing images of the universe with 10 times the clarity of the Hubble Space Telescope.”

“This first-of-its-kind telescope will be capable of exploring the ancient past of the universe, probing the Big Bang and the formation of the first stars, galaxies, and black holes,” the Smithsonian Institute explains.

As of 2017, five primary mirror segments of the Giant Magellan Telescope had been cast, and the telescope is expected to receive its first light seven years later in 2029.

The project is being built at a cost of $1 billion, and has Australia, Brazil, and South Korea, and Chile as partners of the US.
