Italian President Sergio Mattarella was re-elected for a second term at the end of January 2022 after eight rounds of voting in the Italian Parliament.
Mattarella's re-election was backed by a majority of Italian lawmakers, with the 80-year-old receiving an impressive 759 votes from a total of 983 lawmakers in the Mediterranean country.
"I wish to thank lawmakers and regional representatives for the faith they have put in me," Mattarella said in a statement, commenting on his re-election.
"The difficult days of this election, taking place during the serious health, economic, and social emergency we are still going through, call for a sense of responsibility and for the respect of the parliament's decisions," the 80-year-old said, highlighting the prevalent socio-economic conditions in Italy.
"These conditions require [us] to not avoid duties, which must prevail over other thoughts and different personal perspectives," Mattarella added, promising to take action to help his country navigate the ongoing crisis.
Major political leaders, including Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, thanked Mattarella's for his availability and willingness to take up the responsibility, with the PM saying, "This is a great news for Italians, and I am grateful to the president for choosing to oblige to the strong will expressed by the parliament to reconfirm him to a second term."
